Highlights
- Gangaikonda Cholapuram Brihadeeswarar Temple — The great Shiva temple built c. 1035 by Rajendra Chola I as the centrepiece of his new imperial capital, celebrating his conquest of the Gangetic plains. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the Great Living Chola Temples.
- Chola Gangam (Cholagangam Lake) — A large irrigation tank excavated by Rajendra Chola I beside his new capital and fed from the Kaveri and Kollidam, hailed in inscriptions as a liquid pillar of victory commemorating his northern campaigns. It lies close to the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple.
- Jayankondam — The main town and gateway to Gangaikonda Cholapuram, named in the Chola tradition (Jayamkonda) and serving as the commercial hub for the northern part of Ariyalur district.
