The building known as the Ice House was constructed in the 1840s to store large blocks of ice shipped in from abroad during the era before mechanical refrigeration. Its unusual round form makes it one of the most recognisable heritage structures along Chennai's Marina.

Swami Vivekananda stayed here in 1897 during his triumphant return to India after the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago. In 1963, marking his birth centenary, the Tamil Nadu government renamed it Vivekanandar Illam (Vivekananda House), and the Ramakrishna Math now runs it as a museum and cultural centre.
