Black Thunder

This temple in Mettupalayam is dedicated to the fierce goddess Vana Bhadra Kaliamman and is a locally revered shrine on the route toward the Nilgiris. It is known for its annual festival and Amman worship traditions. It serves as a devotional landmark for the Mettupalayam area at the foothills of the Nilgiris.

This ancient Vishnu temple on the Coimbatore–Mettupalayam highway is believed to be over 1,000 years old and enshrines Lord Ranganathar in a reclining posture. Baralikadu is a small tribal village and forest-department ecotourism centre near the Pillur reservoir in the Coimbatore Forest Division, hemmed in by dense forest along the Bhavani River. Its main draw is guided coracle rides on the reservoir accompanied by forest staff, along with a lunch prepared by tribal women. It operates on weekends and holidays and is a growing community-based eco-tourism destination.

Pillur Dam is built across the Bhavani River near Mettupalayam and was constructed between 1961 and 1966 with assistance under the Colombo Plan. Ringed by the Nilgiri foothills and dense forest, its reservoir is a scenic spot supplying water for domestic, agricultural and hydro-power use. It is a popular half-day outing combined with the surrounding hill scenery.

This hill temple to Lord Murugan sits on Anuvavi Hills at Periya Thadagam, about 19 km from Coimbatore city, reached by a long flight of steps. It is best known for a natural spring within the sanctum that flows perennially through all twelve months, tied by legend to Hanuman striking water from the rock. The perennial theertham and forested hill setting make it a popular local pilgrimage and picnic spot.

Anaikatti lies in the Nilgiri foothills on the Coimbatore–Anaikatti road near the Tamil Nadu–Kerala border, surrounded by tribal hamlets, streams and reserve forest. The cool, green hill country is a popular short getaway from Coimbatore and hosts research institutions such as SACON. Its scenery and proximity to the Nilgiri Biosphere make it a favourite drive and picnic destination.

This managed nature park at Anaikatti conserves a large collection of native and medicinal plants, reportedly over 400 species, within the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve landscape. Laid out with trails, a herbal garden and interpretation displays, it functions as an eco-education and recreation destination. It offers visitors a convenient way to experience the biodiversity of the Western Ghats foothills.

A hilltop Murugan temple on the western edge of Coimbatore city, reached by road or a flight of steps, popular for its panoramic views and daily abhishekam rituals.

Set up by the Kasthuri Sreenivasan Trust and inaugurated in 1988, this gallery and textile museum on Avinashi Road chronicles the history of textile technology through charts, models and actual machines, from ancient whorl wheels to modern looms. Fitting for Coimbatore's identity as a textile city, it also displays rare artefacts. It combines an art gallery with an industrial-heritage textile collection.

Established in 1902 by Horace Archibald Gass, then Conservator of Forests, this is one of India's oldest forestry and natural-history museums, set within the Tamil Nadu Forest Academy campus. Its galleries display taxidermied mammals and birds, preserved butterflies and reptiles, and timber and wood samples. It is a valued educational and heritage institution in the city.

This is one of the largest and most prominent temples dedicated to Lord Ayyappan outside Kerala, modelled in layout and worship on the Sabarimala shrine. It becomes a major devotional hub during the Mandala–Makaravilakku pilgrimage season when thousands of black-clad Ayyappa devotees gather. It serves as an important urban Ayyappa centre for Coimbatore's Malayali and Tamil devotees.
