Stone inscriptions trace its origins to the 11th-century Chola period under Raja Raja Chola and Kulothunga Chola, with Shiva worshipped as Chandra Choodeswarar alongside the goddess Maragathambigai. Its annual car festival falls in March-April, and the municipality maintains gardens, a children's park and an observatory nearby. The elevated setting also offers views over Hosur town.
