By tradition Shiva was welcomed here as a bridegroom by his father-in-law, the sage Bharatha, before the wedding at Thiruvelvikudi and the darshan at Thirumanancheri. The deity is worshipped as Airavateswarar, linked to worship by Airavata, the white elephant of Indra.

Its most important day, Kadai Muzhukku (Mudavan Muzhukku), draws huge crowds who believe all sacred rivers converge here. The ghat adjoins the Mayuranathaswamy temple and is one of six Cauvery-bank sites regarded as equivalent to Kasi (Varanasi).
