Highlights

  • Dhanushkodi — A former port town at the southeastern tip of Rameswaram island, reduced to ruins by a devastating cyclone in 1964 and now a haunting ghost town of roofless buildings on a narrow sand spit.
  • Arichal Munai — The narrow sandy point at the very tip of Dhanushkodi where the Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean visibly meet, marking the closest Indian land point to Sri Lanka.
  • Adam's Bridge (Rama Setu) — A chain of limestone shoals and sandbanks stretching about 48 km between Pamban Island and Sri Lanka's Mannar Island, associated in the Ramayana with the bridge built by Rama's army.
  • Kothandaramar Temple — A coastal temple en route to Dhanushkodi marking the spot where, per legend, Vibhishana surrendered to Rama; it was one of the few structures to survive the 1964 cyclone.
  • Villoondi Theertham — A coastal freshwater spring on the way to Dhanushkodi, believed to have been created by Lakshmana's arrow, where pilgrims bathe in a small freshwater pool beside the sea.
  • Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park — A marine biosphere reserve of 21 islands and coral reefs between Rameswaram and Tuticorin, home to dugongs, sea turtles, and diverse reef fish.
