Highlights
- St. John de Britto Shrine, Oriyur — A coastal Roman Catholic pilgrimage shrine marking the spot where Portuguese Jesuit missionary John de Britto, known in Tamil as Arulanandar, was beheaded on 4 February 1693. Britto was beatified in 1853 and canonised by Pope Pius XII in 1947, and the present Portuguese-facade church dates to 1770. The complex holds three churches and draws large crowds of Christian pilgrims, with local tradition holding that the sand around the martyrdom site turned red.
