Highlights

  • St. John de Britto Shrine, Oriyur — A coastal Roman Catholic pilgrimage shrine marking the spot where Portuguese Jesuit missionary John de Britto, known in Tamil as Arulanandar, was beheaded on 4 February 1693. Britto was beatified in 1853 and canonised by Pope Pius XII in 1947, and the present Portuguese-facade church dates to 1770. The complex holds three churches and draws large crowds of Christian pilgrims, with local tradition holding that the sand around the martyrdom site turned red.

South-west monsoon. June to September is the south-west monsoon in Tamil Nadu. Expect heavy showers, mostly in bursts rather than all day — carry rain cover, allow extra time for getting around, and note that ferries and open-air sites are the first things affected.

Sun and moon are calculated for this location and shown in IST. Photography windows are the hour around sunrise and sunset; the sunset bearing is degrees clockwise from true north. Moon phase is accurate to about half a day.
