Places to Visit in Koothanur

A district museum under the Tamil Nadu Department of Museums, housing temple bronzes, sculptures, and anthropology, geology and zoology specimens. Its galleries include Jain and Buddhist artefacts and a display of ancient musical instruments, fitting for a town celebrated as the birthplace of the Carnatic Music Trinity. It offers a secular counterpoint to the district's many temples.

A Shiva temple on the southern bank of the Cauvery, revered as the 70th Paadal Petra Sthalam in the 7th-century Tevaram hymns. It is one of very few temples with a separate shrine for Yama, the god of death, seated beside Chitragupta. Regarded as a Mukti (Moksha) Sthalam where those who die are believed to attain liberation, it draws pilgrims performing death and ancestral rites.

An agrarian Cauvery-delta village that is the ancestral home of former US Vice President Kamala Harris's maternal grandfather, P. V. Gopalan. Its Dharma Sastha (Ayyanar) temple, to which the Gopalan family donated, carries a stone plaque bearing the family name and gained international attention during Harris's rise. The village became a symbol of Tamil Nadu's diaspora heritage.

A Paadal Petra Sthalam Shiva temple at the site of the Sangam-age Battle of Venni, where the Chola king Karikala defeated a Chera-Pandya confederacy around the 2nd century CE. The village was home to the Sangam poet Vennikkuyathiyar, who sang of that battle. The temple is popularly visited as a 'diabetes temple' where devotees pray for relief from blood-sugar ailments.

A Paadal Petra Sthalam Shiva temple whose deity Satchinathar signifies Shiva as the eternal witness (satchi) to truth. It is one of the Pancha Aranya Sthalams, five 'forest' temples of the delta, once set in a grove of trumpet-flower (Paadhiri) trees. Glorified in the Tevaram of Sambandar and Sundarar, it has the Chandra Pushkarini tank linked to lunar worship.

The dargah of Andavar Sheikh Dawood Khamil Oliyullah is one of the oldest Muslim shrines in the region, believed to be several centuries old. Built in a traditional style, it has five minarets, the tallest reputedly added by the Thanjavur Maratha ruler Pratap Singh in the 18th century. It is an interfaith pilgrimage site visited by people of all communities.
