Parijatavaneswarar Temple, Thirukkalar

Large Vaishnava temple of Vishnu as Rajagopalaswamy, called Dakshina Dwaraka, expanded under the Thanjavur Nayaks, with the huge Haridra Nadhi temple tank.

An agrarian Cauvery-delta village that is the ancestral home of former US Vice President Kamala Harris's maternal grandfather, P. V. Gopalan. Its Dharma Sastha (Ayyanar) temple, to which the Gopalan family donated, carries a stone plaque bearing the family name and gained international attention during Harris's rise. The village became a symbol of Tamil Nadu's diaspora heritage.

Cauvery-delta market town at the junction of the Thiruvarur, Thanjavur and Nagapattinam roads, gateway to the Alangudi Guru temple and a traditional agrarian hub.

A Paadal Petra Sthalam Shiva temple and one of the Pancha Aranya Sthalams, associated with a former forest of bilva (vilva) trees, the temple's sacred tree. The deity is worshipped as Vilvaranyeswarar with the goddess Soundara Nayaki. It is revered in the Tevaram hymns of Tirugnanasambandar.

A Paadal Petra Sthalam Shiva temple at the site of the Sangam-age Battle of Venni, where the Chola king Karikala defeated a Chera-Pandya confederacy around the 2nd century CE. The village was home to the Sangam poet Vennikkuyathiyar, who sang of that battle. The temple is popularly visited as a 'diabetes temple' where devotees pray for relief from blood-sugar ailments.

Shiva temple at Alangudi (Tiru Irum Poolai) in Valangaiman taluk that is the Guru (Jupiter/Brihaspati) shrine of the Navagraha circuit, a Paadal Petra Sthalam drawing heavy crowds on Guru transit days.

One of very few temples in India dedicated to goddess Saraswathi, deity of learning, drawing students and scholars and associated with the Tamil poet Ottakoothar.

Vishnu temple counted among the 108 Divya Desams, praised by Thirumangai Alvar, where Vishnu is Bhaktavatsala Perumal with consort Kannamangai Nayagi, and a five-tier rajagopuram of Chola origins.

A district museum under the Tamil Nadu Department of Museums, housing temple bronzes, sculptures, and anthropology, geology and zoology specimens. Its galleries include Jain and Buddhist artefacts and a display of ancient musical instruments, fitting for a town celebrated as the birthplace of the Carnatic Music Trinity. It offers a secular counterpoint to the district's many temples.

A Murugan temple on the Tiruvarur-Thanjavur road listed among the district's official places of interest. It is known for its sculpture of the deity mounted on a peacock and is a locally important shrine to Subramanya. It draws devotees on Murugan festival days in the delta.
