Vandavasi Fort
Vandavasi Fort, anglicised Wandiwash, was the site of the decisive Battle of Wandiwash on 22 January 1760, when Sir Eyre Coote's British force defeated the French under Comte de Lally in the Third Carnatic War. The victory broke French power in India and secured British supremacy in the Carnatic. Earlier held by a Nayak vassal of the Vijayanagara Empire, the fort is remembered by a battle memorial in the town.
