Freedom Park in Gandhi Nagar occupies the site of the old Bangalore Central Jail, where many freedom fighters were imprisoned during the independence struggle. Opened as a public park in 2008, it preserves some of the jail’s watchtowers, cells and walls.

Inspired by London’s Hyde Park, it is now the city’s designated space for protests, rallies and public events, as well as a green civic space with exhibition areas and a small museum on its history.
