The Government Museum on Kasturba Road, established in 1865, is one of the oldest museums in India. Housed in a red colonial building on the edge of Cubbon Park, it holds antiquities, sculpture, coins, inscriptions and archaeological finds from across Karnataka.

Its compound also contains the Venkatappa Art Gallery, showing works of the Mysore court painter K. Venkatappa and other artists, and adjoins the Visvesvaraya technology museum — so several collections sit within a short walk.
