Lalbagh is a 240-acre botanical garden whose origins go back to the 1760s, when Hyder Ali laid it out and his son Tipu Sultan enriched it with plants from across Asia. The British later developed it into a scientific garden with a lake, lawns and glasshouse.

Its centrepiece is the 1890 Glass House, modelled on London’s Crystal Palace, which hosts the famous Republic Day and Independence Day flower shows. The garden also holds one of the oldest rock formations on earth (a 3,000-million-year-old peninsular-gneiss outcrop) and a Kempe Gowda watchtower.
