Karnataka has protected its wet Western Ghats forest for a century. The dry deciduous country on the Telangana border had to wait until 2011 — and in 2023 a camera trap set for leopards found a dog nobody had recorded here since 1966.

The Archaeological Survey of India’s board at the gate gives the fort 74.10 acres, fifteen bastions and twenty-six guns. It does not mention that people live in the ruins, that a court has been ordering their removal since 2019, or that the district’s own website says the fort is half an acre.

A Friday mosque of 1367 with no courtyard at all, its outer walls opened into arcades so that daylight comes in sideways. Nobody can agree how many domes it has: the published counts run from sixty-three to a hundred and seven.

Kalaburagi was the capital of the Deccan for seventy-seven years and most people drive past it. Three monuments, none of them ticketed, all within four kilometres of each other, and a morning is enough.

Two names for one city, and each of them is a different history. Gulbarga is Persian for a city of flowers; Kalaburagi is Kannada for stony land. Both are accurate.

India has put twelve of these monuments on a single UNESCO tentative listing and left them there since 2014. Driven end to end they are one story: a sultanate that broke from Delhi, moved capital twice, and split into five.
