The Achyutaraya (Tiruvengalanatha) Temple is one of the last great temples built at Hampi, consecrated in 1534 under king Achyuta Deva Raya and dedicated to a form of Vishnu. It sits in a natural amphitheatre between Matanga and Gandhamadana hills.

Large and austere, with two concentric enclosures and carved pillars, it is fronted by the long ruined Courtesans’ (Sule) Bazaar. It sees fewer visitors than the main sites, so it is quiet and atmospheric, and it is the usual starting point for the Matanga Hill climb.
