Kumbalangi
Kumbalangi is a cluster of islands south of Kochi designated India’s first model eco-tourism village. It’s a calm, rural alternative to Alleppey for a half-day: country-canoe rides through the backwater canals, Chinese fishing nets and traditional chemmeen-kettu (prawn-filtration) ponds, mangrove walks, coir-making and toddy-tapping demos, and — seasonally — the bioluminescent “Kavaru” glow in the water at night.
- Getting there
- By taxi/auto via Aroor (~30–45 min). No direct ferry — road is easiest. Combine with a backwater canoe operator booked locally.
- Best time
- Year-round; the seasonal Kavaru bioluminescence appears on dark nights (most reported Mar–May).
Distances and timings are indicative — confirm locally. See getting around Kochi.
