In the green, watery flatland of Kuttanad, where the fields lie below the level of the sea and the roads give way to canals, a great church rises unexpectedly over the paddy: Edathua Church, dedicated to St George, on the banks of the river Pamba. It is beautiful, and old, and famous across Kerala — but not for its architecture. It is famous as a place people bring the suffering mind.

A church in the backwaters

The St George Forane Church was built in 1810, its European-influenced façade a landmark in a district otherwise made of water and rice. It lies about fifteen kilometres south-east of Alappuzha town, in country so low it sits beneath sea level — a place you half-expect to reach by boat. Over two centuries it grew into one of the most revered Christian pilgrim centres in Kerala.

Where the afflicted come for peace

What sets Edathua apart is a belief held quietly and fiercely by generations: that prayer and offering here can heal illness — and, above all, illnesses of the mind. In an age with little understanding of mental suffering and few places to turn, families brought their disturbed and their despairing to St George at Edathua, and many stayed for days or weeks near the church, praying, hoping, watched over. That tradition endures. People still travel here from far away seeking relief from anguish and affliction that medicine alone has not eased — and whatever one believes about the how of it, there is something profoundly human in a place that, for two hundred years, has simply refused to turn the troubled away.

The Perunnal

The church’s great feast, the Edathua Perunnal, runs from the 27th of April to the 7th of May each year and draws enormous crowds of every faith. Its highlight is the procession in which the statue of St George, decked in gold, is carried in solemn splendour amid music, lamps and the pressing devotion of thousands. For a district best known for its serene backwaters, it is a startling explosion of colour and sound.

Visiting Edathua

Edathua lies deep in the Kuttanad backwaters south-east of Alappuzha, and the journey there — through paddy, palm and canal — is half the experience. Come for the late-April feast for the full spectacle, or on a quiet day to feel the strange, gentle calm of a place devoted to healing. Details are on the Edathua place page; more of the district is on the Alappuzha hub.
