The red-and-white tower above Lighthouse Beach is easy to treat as a resort emblem. The Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships tells a different beginning: Vizhinjam was a natural fishing harbour that needed a navigational mark before the beach became a holiday image.
A marker before the tower
The Directorate records a day mark at Vizhinjam in 1960. A day mark helps mariners recognise an approach in daylight; it is not the same as a lighted lighthouse. The larger tower was completed in 1972, and equipment supplied from Paris was commissioned on 20 May of that year. Those dates show a sequence of harbour navigation works rather than one sudden appearance of the striped landmark.
A working light that changed inside
The tower remained useful after it became a postcard subject. The Directorate says its incandescent lamp was replaced with a metal-halide lamp and a direct-drive system was installed on 30 April 2003. The outside stayed familiar while the navigation equipment changed. That is a more revealing story than treating the building as a static monument.

Kerala Tourism’s lighthouse page describes the 118-foot tower as open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check current access, admission and any climb restrictions before travelling: published hours can change and weather or maintenance may affect entry. The official source does not establish that a visitor lift is available, so do not plan on step-free access without confirming it directly.
From the headland, the interest is the relationship between places: Kovalam’s beach coves to one side, Vizhinjam’s working harbour to the other, and the sea that made a reliable mark necessary. The tower belongs to that maritime coast first. Its tourism role came later.
