At the northern end of Shanghumukham there is a stretch where slabs of concrete lie tipped at angles in the sand, with creeper growing over them and fishing boats drawn up alongside.
It reads as construction debris. It is the road. That was the approach road to the airport, and the sea took it.
What 4.73 metres a year means
Shoreline reduction at Shanghumukham has been measured at about 4.73 metres a year. Written down it is an unremarkable-looking number. On the ground it is the width of a small room, gone, every year.
Over a decade that is a strip nearly fifty metres wide — which on a beach where the road, the promenade and a large sculpture all sit within a hundred metres of the waterline is the difference between having infrastructure and not having it. It is why the seafront here is perpetually fenced, rebuilt, re-fenced and rebuilt again, and why a visitor who finds part of the promenade closed has not been unlucky.
Why this coast loses sand
A beach is not a fixed object; it is a balance. Sand arrives, mostly carried along the shore by the longshore drift that the south-west monsoon drives up this coast, and sand leaves, pulled offshore by storm waves. A stable beach is one where those roughly cancel over a year.
Kerala’s coast has had that balance disrupted from both ends. Rivers that once delivered sediment to the shoreline are dammed and are sand-mined, so less material arrives; the state banned sand mining across six rivers in 2015 precisely because of the scale of extraction. Meanwhile, hard structures along the coast — harbour breakwaters, groynes and sea walls — interrupt the drift, trapping sand on one side and starving the shore on the other.
A sea wall protects what is directly behind it and generally makes the problem worse further along, because it reflects wave energy rather than absorbing it the way a sloping beach does. That is the uncomfortable arithmetic of hard coastal defence: each installation is locally rational and collectively costly, and the bill lands on whoever is downdrift.
The city end of the problem
Shanghumukham is a bad place for this to happen, because there is no room to retreat. The runway of Trivandrum International ends immediately behind the beach. The Arattu Mandapam and the Sagarakanyaka stand on the sand. The promenade, the food stalls and the road that the city’s entire evening social life depends on are all within metres of the water.
On an undeveloped shore, erosion is a process; the beach migrates landward and remains a beach. Here there is nothing for it to migrate into, so every metre lost is a metre of built structure to defend, replace or abandon. That is why the answer has been repeated hard engineering, and why the answer keeps needing repeating.
What to look at
Walk to the northern end and stand where the slabs are. You can read the sequence directly: the road surface, the base course under it, the drop where the ground beneath was scoured out, and the beach that is now where the road was.
It is the most legible piece of coastal erosion within reach of any Indian state capital, and it is fifteen minutes from the airport terminal whose road it used to be.
None of which is a reason to skip the beach. Shanghumukham in the evening is one of the best free things in Kerala. But the thing everybody photographs is the mermaid and the sunset, and the thing that will decide what this beach looks like in twenty years is the broken road nobody photographs at all.
