The striped lighthouse at Thangassery makes a convenient centre for a Kollam coastal walk. It is also one of the newest major chapters in a much older place. Kerala Tourism describes fort remains and the layers of European activity here; the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships dates the present tower to 1902. A visitor who sees only the light misses the quarter that made this point worth marking.
A coast used before the 1902 tower
Kerala Tourism associates St Thomas Fort at Thangassery with Portuguese construction and later Dutch and British use. The lighthouse directorate’s account begins its own station history with an earlier British-era marker, then the present light. These documents are not two versions of one founding event. They describe defensive, commercial and navigational uses of the coast across different periods.
The fort remains do not offer a complete plan of each European phase, and the tower does not explain every street around it. Seen together, they give the walk its sequence: a settlement and trading coast, a fort that changed hands, then aids to navigation for ships approaching the area.
What about the “99 acres”?
Some descriptions repeat a precise 99-acre figure for a Thangassery enclave. The official tourism and lighthouse pages reviewed for this story do not supply a boundary map or survey establishing that number. It should not be used to draw a visitor route or to assert an exact historical perimeter. The named places themselves are easier to verify than an unexplained area measurement.
A practical walk can follow public streets between the lighthouse and fort remains, with attention to current access at each site. A cemetery and other historic markers described in tourism material extend the story beyond the two most photographed structures. Respect active neighbourhood spaces and do not assume every walled area is a museum.
Use the tower as a point of orientation
The lighthouse gives the coast a clear visual marker. Its changing lamp and tower history belongs to the modern navigation chapter. The fort date discrepancy belongs to the older one. Keeping them separate makes both easier to understand.
Thangassery is not a 1902 attraction surrounded by blank space. It is a historic quarter in which a working maritime landmark arrived late. The strongest walk starts with the tower, then lets the surrounding places change the scale of the story.
