Wayanad’s attractions are spread across a wide hill district, so the key to a two-day trip is to group them by side rather than criss-cross the ghats. This route spends day one on the eastern Sulthan Bathery side (caves, heritage and wildlife) and day two on the plantation side around Meppadi and Vythiri (peak, waterfalls and lakes). Base yourself centrally around Kalpetta or Vythiri to keep both days short.

The 2-day route at a glance

DaySideHighlights
1Eastern (Sulthan Bathery)Edakkal Caves, Wayanad Heritage Museum, Muthanga safari
2Plantation (Meppadi / Vythiri)Chembra viewpoint, Soochipara, Pookode Lake, Lakkidi

Day 1 — the eastern heritage side

Start early at Edakkal Caves — a 45-minute uphill climb to prehistoric petroglyphs, closed on Mondays, so plan around that. Pair it with the nearby Wayanad Heritage Museum at Ambalavayal, and the skull-shaped Phantom Rock viewpoint. If you want wildlife, book a morning or afternoon jeep safari at Muthanga — slots are capped and fill early.

Day 2 — the plantation side

The Chembra Peak trek to the heart-shaped lake is Wayanad’s signature walk, but it runs through the Forest Department with a permit and guide, and access changes with weather and conservation rules — confirm before you go. For an easier day, see Soochipara Waterfalls, the calm Pookode Lake and the misty Lakkidi View Point.

One honest caveat: the Meppadi–Chooralmala belt has seen serious landslides, most recently in 2024, and access there can be restricted at short notice. Check current conditions with DTPC Wayanad or the Forest Department before committing your second day to that side.

Practicalities

The nearest airport and railhead are both at Kozhikode, about two to three hours down the ghat road, so allow extra time for hairpins and traffic. October to March is the easiest window — see our best time for Wayanad wildlife and the statewide getting-around guide. For a deeper look at the walks, see the Wayanad treks guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is 2 days enough for Wayanad?

For the headline sights, yes — splitting the trip into an eastern day and a plantation day covers caves, a waterfall, a lake and either a peak walk or a wildlife safari without long daily drives. Three days lets you add the northern Mananthavady side.

What is the best base for a 2-day Wayanad trip?

Somewhere central like Kalpetta or Vythiri keeps both the eastern and plantation sides within about an hour, rather than backtracking across the district each day.

Is Chembra Peak always open?

No. The Chembra trek is permit-controlled by the Forest Department and can close for weather or conservation; the summit stretch beyond the heart-shaped lake stays closed. Always confirm current access before you plan your day around it.
