About

About Munnar

Munnar is a tea-plantation hill station in the Idukki district of Kerala, set at around 1,600 m (5,200 ft) in the Western Ghats, with a cool climate year-round. The town itself — the plantation-era hub around Old Munnar bazaar, the KSRTC bus stand and the taxi/jeep stands — is the base for most stays, with the Tea Museum and estate offices clustered nearby. The hills around it shelter endemic and threatened Western Ghats wildlife, most famously the endangered Nilgiri Tahr protected at Eravikulam National Park, and the once-in-twelve-years mass bloom of the blue Neelakurinji flower. The lake-and-dam belt (Mattupetty, Echo Point, Kundala), Eravikulam/Rajamala and Top Station all lie 13–32 km out along the higher roads, reached on day trips from the town.

Book with the place itself. India’s cyber-crime coordination centre warned in April 2025 that convincing copies of hotel and pilgrimage booking sites are being pushed through sponsored search and social ads, taking payment for rooms the property never hears about. Every listing here links to the business’s own contact details and its own Google or Bing profile — we take no commission and sit in nobody’s payment path. If a booking page reached you through an ad, check the address bar against the property’s own site before you pay. Fraud can be reported on cybercrime.gov.in or on 1930.

Things to do

What to do in Munnar

Tea Museum (KDHP / Tata Tea)

A museum in Munnar town showcasing the area’s tea-plantation legacy and processing, established by Tata Tea in 2005 (now run on the KDHP estate). A good first stop to understand the landscape you are travelling through. Timings and entry vary — confirm locally.

Indicative — confirm locally
Eravikulam National Park (Rajamala)

About 15 km from town, this park protects the largest surviving population of the endangered Nilgiri Tahr; entry is via a shuttle from Rajamala. The tourism zone closes during the Tahr calving/breeding season (roughly February–March, sometimes into early April). Book via the official online system (eravikulamnationalpark.in) or the Munnar information centre — fees and timings are indicative, confirm before you go.

Indicative — confirm at park
Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point & Kundala

The lake-and-dam corridor ~13 km from town toward Top Station: a concrete gravity dam and reservoir with boating at Mattupetty, the lakeside Echo Point named for its echo off the hills, and Kundala Lake with pedal boats, shikaras and rowboats amid tea-clad slopes.

Boating indicative — confirm locally
Top Station

Kerala’s highest viewpoint (~1,700 m, ~32 km from town) on the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border, with panoramas over the Theni plains and a former terminus of the historic Kundala Valley railway/ropeway.

Free viewpoint (transport extra)
Attukal & Lakkam waterfalls

Attukal (Attukad) Waterfalls is a scenic cascade ~9 km from town, best in monsoon/winter; Lakkam (Lakkom) Waterfalls is a high-altitude falls on the Marayoor road. Both are best with care in the wet season when flows and road conditions change.

Indicative — confirm locally
Marayoor & Chinnar (rain-shadow belt)

The drier country ~40–60 km out: Kerala’s only protected natural sandalwood forest at Marayoor, and Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary on the Tamil Nadu border (grizzled giant squirrel, Thoovanam waterfalls, dolmens, eco-trekking). A longer full-day trip from the town.

Eco-tourism fees indicative — confirm locally
Safety & practical info

Is Munnar safe?

Overall
Munnar is a relaxed hill town and generally safe. The main considerations are mountain roads, weather and wildlife-park rules rather than crime.
Mountain roads
Roads are mostly paved but narrow, winding and steep, with poor visibility in mist and rain. Drive cautiously and avoid night and peak-monsoon driving on the ghats.
Getting around
Uber/Ola are not reliable in the hills and local taxi unions have resisted app cabs — don’t count on ride-hailing. Use pre-booked taxis or hotel cabs and agree the fare up front; jeeps handle off-road runs, autos suit short in-town hops only.
Monsoon (Jun–Aug)
Heavy rain brings mist, reduced visibility and landslide/road-block risk on the ghat roads. Allow buffer time, check road conditions, and reconsider remote trips in peak monsoon.
Wildlife parks
Eravikulam closes during the Nilgiri Tahr breeding season (roughly Feb–Mar). Stay on shuttle routes and marked trails, keep a safe distance from animals, and don’t feed wildlife. Anamudi and forest treks need Forest/Wildlife permission.
Altitude & cold
At ~1,600 m it is cool year-round and cold at night — carry warm layers. Days can still be sunny at altitude, so bring sun cover.
Health
Drink sealed or filtered water. For serious medical needs the larger hospitals are down the ghats toward Adimali/Kochi, so factor in travel time from the hills.
FAQs

Munnar — common questions

What is Munnar known for?

Munnar is a tea-plantation hill station in Idukki district, Kerala, known for its rolling tea estates, cool Western Ghats climate, viewpoints, waterfalls, Eravikulam National Park (Nilgiri Tahr) and the rare Neelakurinji bloom.

Which district is Munnar in?

Munnar is in the Idukki district of Kerala, in the Western Ghats at around 1,600 m elevation.

How do I get to Munnar?

It is ~130 km (about 4 hours) by road from Kochi via the Adimali ghat route. There is no railway to Munnar — the nearest stations are Aluva and Ernakulam/Angamaly, with onward travel by road or KSRTC/private bus. Cochin International is the nearest major airport.

When is the best time to visit Munnar?

September to March for cool, pleasant hill weather. April–May is warmer and drier; the June–August monsoon is lush but brings mist and landslide/road-block risk on the ghats.

How do I get around Munnar?

Pre-booked taxis and hotel cabs are the norm — ride-hailing apps are unreliable in the hills. Negotiate fares up front, use jeeps for off-road runs, and autos for short in-town hops. Most attractions (Mattupetty, Eravikulam, Top Station) are 13–32 km out and visited by day trip.
