The Varkala cliff is a National Geological Monument, notified in 2014, and it is the reason anybody comes here. It is also actively failing, in a way that is well documented, partly natural and substantially our fault. That is worth knowing before you book a room with a view over the edge.

The cliff is a sandwich, and only the top slice is strong

This site’s own Varkala page already corrects the most common description: it is not a laterite cliff. The laterite is a cap, on the order of three to four metres thick, and it is the hard bit. Underneath it are the Warkalli Formation sediments — sandstones, clays, lignite — which are far softer and are what the laterite is resting on.

That arrangement is unstable by design. Water gets down through cracks in the hard cap, reaches the soft layers, and works on them. The soft material goes first. The cap is then left overhanging, unsupported, and eventually a section of it drops — which is why cliff failures here tend to happen as sudden collapses rather than as gradual crumbling.

The number

Roughly 109 metres of lateral erosion on the North Cliff over the last century. That is not a projection; it is measurement of what has already gone. Over a hundred years the edge people stand on has moved inland by more than the length of a football pitch.

Some of that is simply the sea, and would have happened with nobody here at all. The rest is the way the cliff top has been developed, and that part is recent and reversible.

The pipes

The single most damaging detail is also the least photogenic. Buildings along the cliff edge dispose of wastewater through concealed pipes that discharge onto the cliff face. That is water being deliberately introduced into exactly the mechanism described above — through the cap, into the soft layers, continuously, all year, including through the dry months when the cliff would otherwise get a rest.

Add unregulated construction directly on the edge, which loads the cap, and the picture is of a geological monument being undermined by the industry that exists because of it. The National Green Tribunal has sought a status report from the Geological Survey of India and other authorities, and the district disaster management authority has ordered the closure of stretches of cliff-top pathway after erosion events. Neither is a resolution.

What this means for a visitor, practically
  • Do not stand at the very edge, and particularly not on an overhang or after heavy rain. Failures here are sudden, not gradual.
  • Take any closure of a cliff-top path seriously. Those closures follow erosion events; they are not crowd control.
  • The beach below is where material lands. Keep away from the base of the face, especially in and after the monsoon.
  • When choosing where to stay and eat, the places set back from the edge are the ones not adding load and water to the problem.

Why it is worth caring about beyond safety

The cliff is a section through several million years of sediment, exposed at the surface, at the roadside, in one continuous face. That is why the Geological Survey notified it — it is a teaching exposure of a kind that is genuinely rare, and it is the reason the Warkalli Formation is named after this town rather than somewhere else. What erodes is not just a viewpoint. It is the exposure itself.

There is no comfortable ending to put on this. The cliff will keep moving inland; the question is only how fast, and the wastewater and the building are the parts of the rate that are within anyone’s control. A visitor cannot fix that, but knowing what the face is made of changes how you look at it, and it is a more interesting thing to look at once you do.
