The Theosophical Society was founded in New York in 1875 and relocated its international headquarters to Adyar, on the south bank of the Adyar river in Chennai, in 1882. The wooded estate, historically called Huddleston Gardens, spans roughly 260 acres and remains the Society's global centre to this day.
The grounds are a green sanctuary in a dense city, holding the headquarters building, gardens, and shrines and memorials associated with many of the world's faiths, reflecting the Society's motto of universal brotherhood without distinction of creed.
