St. Andrew's Kirk

A Church of Scotland kirk consecrated in 1821, built to serve the Scottish community of Madras and modelled on St Martin-in-the-Fields in London. Its circular nave is crowned by a shallow masonry dome painted deep blue and studded with gilt stars, and rests on cast-iron columns. It is considered one of the finest colonial churches in India.

St. Andrew's Kirk is planned from Egmore, one of the travel bases in Chennai district. Use Egmore for stays, food and local transport, then plan this place as a focused stop.

The story

St Andrew’s Kirk is an active Presbyterian church in Egmore, recognised by its circular plan, classical portico and blue, star-detailed dome.

The story of St. Andrew's Kirk

Consecrated in 1821, the church is associated with the engineer Thomas de Havilland and architect James Caldwell. Its geometry is easiest to understand by first walking around the permitted exterior and then looking up into the dome if interior access is offered.

The pale blue interior, restrained classical detailing and circular congregation space distinguish the Kirk from Chennai’s Gothic church landmarks. Allow time to notice how daylight and the ring of columns organise the room rather than treating it as a quick photograph stop.

This remains a place of worship. Contact the church before travelling specifically for an interior visit, avoid service and funeral times, dress respectfully and ask before photographing people. An exterior-only visit may be the appropriate plan on a working day.
