The story of Piranmalai Kodunkundranathar Temple

A large Shiva temple set on the fortified Piranmalai hill (over 2,000 ft), the last outcrop of the Eastern Ghats in Tirupathur taluk. Regarded as the fifth of the Tevaram-praised Shiva sthalams of the Pandya region, the roughly 30-acre complex has three prakarams, five vimanams and a tall rajagopuram, with shrines representing Bhumi, Antariksham and Swargam. The hilltop also holds a Bhairavar shrine, the Pandava Theerthams and the dargah of Waliullah Sheikh Abdullah, making it sacred to both Hindus and Muslims.

This ancient Vishnu temple near Tirupathur is one of the 108 Divya Desams glorified in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham of the Alvars. It is famed as the place where the Vaishnava acharya Ramanuja proclaimed the sacred Ashtakshara mantra 'Om Namo Narayanaya' to all people from the temple tower, defying his teacher's instruction to keep it secret. Its landmark Ashtanga Vimana rises even taller than the five-tiered rajagopuram and enshrines the deity in three postures across its levels.

An ancient Shiva temple (Kotravaleeswarar / Rajakhadga Paramesvara) at Koviloor near Karaikudi, built in the Dravidian style and associated with Pandya-era patronage.
