Stone House is associated with John Sullivan and the early colonial development of Ooty, but it stands within the Government Arts College campus rather than as a guaranteed walk-in museum.
The story of Stone House, Ooty
Built in the early 1820s and remembered locally as Kal Bangla, the bungalow represents the shift from Indigenous Toda landscape to a British administrative hill station. That history should be read alongside, not instead of, the older life of the plateau.
The building’s value lies in its age, stone construction and setting. Campus use, conservation and institutional rules can limit entry, so an exterior view may be the only responsible plan on a particular day.
Contact the college or ask at the campus entrance before travelling specifically for the interior. Do not enter teaching or residential areas, and combine the stop with nearby Ooty sights only after confirming access.
