Vedapureeswarar Temple, Thiruverkadu

One of Tamil Nadu's most-visited Amman shrines, dedicated to the goddess Karumariamman and believed to be around 1,000 years old. The locality was historically a dense neem forest, which gave it the name Velkadu or Thiruverkadu. Sundays are the special day of worship and draw very large crowds of devotees.

An ancient Shiva temple at Vada Thirumullaivayil counted among the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams, the 22nd in the Thondai Nadu region, and sung in the Tevaram hymns. The presiding deity is Masilamaneeswarar. The temple is regarded as more than a millennium old.

A Vishnu temple in the historic town of Poonamallee whose origins are traced to the 10th century CE during the reign of Chola king Parantaka I. It is one of the principal heritage temples of the old Poonamallee, formerly Poovirundhavalli, settlement.

Built in 1653 CE by Rustam, son of the Golconda courtier Astirabad Dhulfiqar, and regarded as the first Indo-Saracenic style mosque in Tamil Nadu. A Persian inscription dated 1653 CE inside the mosque records its founding. It is one of the key heritage monuments of historic Poonamallee.

The 58th of the 108 Divya Desams, dedicated to Vishnu worshipped here as Bhaktavatsala Perumal, the lover of devotees, with his consort known as Ennai Petra Thayar. The temple is attributed to the Pallavas of the late 8th century. It is built in classic Dravidian style with a five-tiered rajagopuram and a granite sanctum.

A Shiva temple in Kadambathur village, about 250 m from Kadambathur railway station and around 9 km from Thiruvallur. The area was once a forest of kadamba trees, giving it its name. The 13th-century siddhar Shivadeva is associated with worship at this temple.

A popular goddess temple on the banks of the Arani river at Periyapalayam, roughly 45 km north of Chennai on the highway near Red Hills. The main complex is around 200 years old and is dedicated to Bhavani Amman. During the Tamil months of Aadi and Aavani it draws lakhs of pilgrims.

A well-known Murugan temple, dedicated to Balasubramania Swamy, in Siruvapuri village in Ponneri taluk, a popular pilgrimage stop on the northern Chennai belt. It lies close to Periyapalayam and is often visited together with the Bhavani Amman temple there.
