Muthupet Lagoon and Mangroves

The dargah of Andavar Sheikh Dawood Khamil Oliyullah is one of the oldest Muslim shrines in the region, believed to be several centuries old. Built in a traditional style, it has five minarets, the tallest reputedly added by the Thanjavur Maratha ruler Pratap Singh in the 18th century. It is an interfaith pilgrimage site visited by people of all communities.

An ancient temple dedicated to Rama, counted among the Pancha Rama Kshetrams and the 108 Abhimana Kshetrams of Vaishnavism. It is distinctive as one of the few Rama temples where the presiding deity holds an arrow inscribed as 'Rama Saram'. Legend holds that Rama rested here at the ashram of sage Bharadwaja on his return journey to Ayodhya.

Taluk town in the south of the district on the route to the Muthupet mangroves and coastal delta, a local trade centre amid paddy fields and small delta temples.

An agrarian Cauvery-delta village that is the ancestral home of former US Vice President Kamala Harris's maternal grandfather, P. V. Gopalan. Its Dharma Sastha (Ayyanar) temple, to which the Gopalan family donated, carries a stone plaque bearing the family name and gained international attention during Harris's rise. The village became a symbol of Tamil Nadu's diaspora heritage.

Shiva temple near Thiruthuraipoondi honoured as a Paadal Petra Sthalam, traditionally regarded as the last place graced by the saint Thirunavukkarasar (Appar), a quiet stop on the delta Thevaram trail.

Large Vaishnava temple of Vishnu as Rajagopalaswamy, called Dakshina Dwaraka, expanded under the Thanjavur Nayaks, with the huge Haridra Nadhi temple tank.

A Paadal Petra Sthalam Shiva temple in the Mannargudi region, revered in the Tevaram of the Saiva Nayanmars. The deity is worshipped as Parijatavaneswarar, the name linked to the celestial Parijata (coral) tree. It is one of the lesser-visited Tevara sthalams of the delta.

Ancient Shiva temple at Thirukkuvalai (Thirukolili), a Paadal Petra Sthalam praised in the Thevaram, where Shiva is worshipped as Brahmapureeswarar in a historic delta temple town.

Well-known Rama temple at Vaduvur, called the Dakshina Ayodhya of the delta, dedicated to Kothandaramaswamy (Rama with his bow) and a landmark of the Mannargudi area.

A delta wetland bird sanctuary of about 128 hectares on Vaduvur lake, declared in 1999, drawing painted storks, grey pelicans, spoonbills, darters and open-bill storks.

Cauvery-delta market town at the junction of the Thiruvarur, Thanjavur and Nagapattinam roads, gateway to the Alangudi Guru temple and a traditional agrarian hub.

Vast Shiva temple of Thyagaraja (Veedhi Vidangar) and Vanmikanathar, a Paadal Petra Sthalam sung in the Thevaram. Its Aazhi Ther is one of Asia's largest temple chariots and it holds the huge Kamalalayam tank.
