Thattekkad & Bhoothathankettu
The Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary at Thattekkad, on the Periyar near Kothamangalam (~50–65 km from Kochi), is Kerala’s first bird sanctuary — prime territory for the Indian pitta, Ceylon frogmouth, hornbills and dozens of endemics, best explored on an early-morning guided trail. Nearby Bhoothathankettu offers a reservoir, dam and forest walks with authorised boating. Best from November to February.
