History & overview
The Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary at Thattekkad — named for the pioneering ornithologist who called it one of the richest bird habitats in peninsular India — was Kerala’s first bird sanctuary. On an early-morning guided trail you can hope for the Indian pitta, Sri Lanka frogmouth, hornbills and dozens of Western Ghats endemics. It sits on the Periyar near Kothamangalam, about 50–65 km from Kochi; November to February is the best window.
