Edward Elliot's Beach sits at the southern end of Chennai's shoreline in the Besant Nagar neighbourhood and is a calmer, more compact counterpart to Marina Beach. Affectionately called 'Bessie' by locals, it is popular with families, students and evening strollers.
The beach is fringed by cafes, ice-cream parlours and eateries, and its most notable landmark is the Kaj Schmidt Memorial, a small heritage monument to a Danish sailor who drowned near this spot on 30 December 1930 while trying to save others. Restored from a derelict state in the 2010s, it is the beach's only heritage structure.
