Highlights
- Ardhanatheeswarar Temple, Elavanasur — This Shiva temple stands on a rocky hill called Thirumalai and, because it was built fort-like with guardian deities on all four sides, the place is known as Elavanasur Kottai (fort). The deity is called Ardhanatheeswarar, a Sanskritised form of the local name Oor Bhagam Kondaruliya Nayanar. Inscriptions ranging from about 900 to 1500 CE name Chola rulers such as Rajaraja I, Rajendra I, Uttama Chola and Kulothunga I and the Pallava king Kopperunjinga, and its three-tier rajagopuram dates to the Chola period.
