The Aiyarappar (Panchanatheeswarar) Temple at Thiruvaiyaru is a large Shiva temple on the banks of the Cauvery, about 13 km north-west of Thanjavur. Its name — Thiru-aiyaru, “the sacred five rivers” — refers to the river branches around the town.
Thiruvaiyaru is also the home of the composer-saint Thyagaraja, and the town fills each January for the Thyagaraja Aradhana, a major Carnatic music festival held near his samadhi.
