Where the Kadalundi river meets the Arabian Sea, roughly nineteen kilometres from Kozhikode city and split across two districts. Over a hundred native bird species have been recorded here and about sixty migratory species visit seasonally — whimbrels and brahminy kites among the named ones. Ignore the "200 metres above sea level" in Wikipedia's infobox: this is a tidal estuary at a river mouth.

A community reserve is a different legal animal from a sanctuary — it is declared over land where people keep their rights and agree to conserve it. This was Kerala's first, declared in 2007, covering 153.84 hectares including 21.22 hectares of reserve forest, and protecting mangrove, mudflat and five named islands: Company Thuruthu, Cheru Thuruthu, Cee Pee Thuruthu, Bala Thuruthu and Mannan Thuruthu.
