Sriperumbudur, a town in Kancheepuram district on the Chennai-Bengaluru highway, is best known today as an industrial and manufacturing hub, but its enduring heritage draw is the Adikesava Perumal temple. Built in the Dravidian style with later Chola-era work and early inscriptions on site, it enshrines Vishnu as Adikesava and is counted among the important Vaishnava temples of the region.
The temple's great significance is as the birthplace of Ramanuja (traditionally 1017-1137 CE), the philosopher-saint who systematised the Vishishtadvaita (qualified non-dualism) school and profoundly shaped Sri Vaishnavism. A dedicated shrine to Ramanuja stands within the complex, making it a major pilgrimage stop for devotees tracing his life alongside the nearby temple towns of Kanchipuram.
