Vaikunta Perumal Temple, historically known as Tiru Parameswara Vinnagaram, was built in the 8th century by the Pallava emperor Nandivarman II Pallavamalla. It is one of Kanchipuram's most important early stone temples and reflects mature Pallava architecture.

Unusually, the shrine rises in three levels with three vertically aligned sanctums, showing Vishnu in seated, reclining and standing forms. This is a Kanchipuram-city temple and should not be confused with the Vaikunta Perumal temple at Uthiramerur.
