The granite pillars of Bathery’s Jain temple preserve a religious history older than the town’s military name.

The story of Jain Temple

Kerala Tourism dates the shrine to the thirteenth century and describes its later use as an ammunition store by Tipu Sultan. The stone columns, slab roof and restrained enclosure reward attention to the building’s proportions. Its change of use helps explain the familiar Bathery name without making the structure merely a military relic.

Things to do

Look closely at the square granite pillars — lotus motifs, elephants, a snake and a swan, cut in a Vijayanagara idiom that is unusual this far south-west.
Stand in the pillared mandapa and note the stone-slab roof carried entirely on those columns.
Understand why the town is called what it is: Tipu Sultan's forces used this temple as an ammunition store, and 'Sultan's Battery' stuck.
Notice how little of Jain Kerala survives — this is one of a small handful of substantial Jain monuments in the state.

It is in the middle of town, not out in the countryside — you can walk here from the bus stand, and many people drive past without realising.
Pair it with Edakkal Caves, about 12 km away, which is the other genuinely old thing on this side of Wayanad.
There is no interpretation on site to speak of. Read the history first or it will look like a plain stone hall.
