The Ganesha Ratha is a monolithic temple hewn from a single granite outcrop during the Pallava era of the 7th century, echoing the chariot form of the nearby Pancha Rathas. Its three-tiered, wagon-roofed profile shows the early South Indian temple vocabulary in miniature.
Originally a Shiva shrine, the sanctum's linga was removed and replaced with an image of Ganesha in the 19th century, giving the ratha its present name. It stands on a rise just northwest of the great Arjuna's Penance relief.
