The Panchapandava Cave is the biggest of Mamallapuram's rock-cut mandapas, excavated into the granite ridge close to Arjuna's Penance. Its wide facade of lion-based pillars and pilasters is classic Pallava work, and a second row of columns leads into an inner hall flanked by deep side aisles.
What makes it unusual is that it was left unfinished: the planned circumambulatory path and large wall reliefs were never completed. That very incompleteness has made it a valuable teaching example of how 7th-century rock-cut temples were quarried and shaped from the top down.
