The Shore Temple is one of the earliest and most important structural (as opposed to rock-cut) stone temples in South India, raised in dressed granite under the Pallava king Narasimhavarman II, known as Rajasimha, in the early 8th century. Standing directly on the shoreline of the Bay of Bengal, it is the emblem of the Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1984.
Unlike the town's monolithic rathas carved from living rock, this temple was built up block by block, with two Shiva shrines and a reclining Vishnu shrine enclosed by a wall lined with rows of seated Nandi bulls. Centuries of salt wind and sea spray have softened its carvings, yet the tiered pyramidal towers still command the coast.
