Sthalasayana Perumal Temple is Mamallapuram's principal living Vishnu shrine and one of the 108 Divya Desams revered in the hymns of the Alvar saints. The presiding deity reclines on the ground, giving the name Sthalasayana ('resting on the earth'), with the goddess worshipped as Nilamangai Thayar.
By tradition the temple is the birthplace of Bhutathazhwar, the second of the twelve Alvars, and it is celebrated in the Tamil Naalayira Divya Prabandham. Built in the Dravidian style, the complex is fronted by a tall, several-tiered rajagopuram raised in the later Vijayanagara period, standing amid the town rather than among the seaside ruins.
