By the matha's own tradition, it was founded by the philosopher Adi Shankara in ancient times. However, this founding claim and the early succession list are questioned by modern scholarship, so the Adi Shankara origin is best understood as devotional tradition rather than settled history.

The town auditorium, 942 metres north-west of the bus stand — kalai arangam means arts hall. Municipal halls like this are where a Tamil town's public cultural life actually happens: music and dance programmes, school and college events, government functions, the occasional touring performance.
