The Thiruporur Kandaswamy Temple is a prominent shrine to Murugan, worshipped here in his warrior form as Kandaswamy, holding the vel (divine spear) in a standing granite image within the sanctum. According to legend, Thiruporur is where Murugan won an aerial battle over the demon Tharukasura, and tradition links the name Porur to the Tamil word for war.
The temple's later history is bound to the saint Chidambara Swamigal, who tradition holds unearthed the buried deity and expanded the shrine, and who is remembered for composing hundreds of devotional verses in its praise. Today it is a busy living temple with a soaring gopuram, separate shrines for Murugan's consorts Valli and Deivanai, and a full calendar of daily rituals and festivals.
