Kuttanad Paddy Fields

Kuttanad’s paddy fields sit among canals and backwaters, with bunds holding water away from cultivated land. Come to see a working farming landscape, rather than a single attraction with an entrance gate.

Working reclaimed rice fields within Kuttanad’s below-sea-level wetland farming system.

The landscape depends on dykes, drainage and seasonal farm work.

The story

Kuttanad’s rice fields are a water-management landscape: fields, dykes, canals and fishing water working together below sea level.

The story of Paddy fields

The Food and Agriculture Organization recognises the Kuttanad Below Sea Level Farming System as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System. Farmers made cultivable land by draining delta wetlands and managing the water around paddy blocks. The point is not that every part of Kuttanad lies below the sea, but that particular reclaimed fields do.

FAO describes a mosaic: paddy and fish wetlands, garden land, inland fishing water and connected channels. Kerala Tourism names Rani, Chithira and Marthandam among well-known reclaimed paddy stretches. A boat can reveal the difference between canal water and field level, but a houseboat view is not permission to cross farm bunds or enter working plots.

The view changes with planting, drainage and harvest. Ask a local guide which fields are actively cultivated before promising a wall of green. This is a living farm system, not a decorative backdrop for a cruise.

Book with the place itself. India’s cyber-crime coordination centre warned in April 2025 that convincing copies of hotel and pilgrimage booking sites are being pushed through sponsored search and social ads, taking payment for rooms the property never hears about. Use the contact and source details on each profile to confirm the exact business and booking channel. A directory entry or map pin alone does not establish an operator’s identity or current availability. Roampedia takes no commission and does not collect booking payments. If a booking page reached you through an ad, check the address bar against the property’s own site before you pay. Fraud can be reported on cybercrime.gov.in or on 1930.
