Thekkady travel guide
The gateway to Periyar Tiger Reserve — spice hills, lake boat safaris and the cardamom-town bustle of Kumily.
About Thekkady
Thekkady is the visitor base for the Periyar Tiger Reserve, one of South India’s best-known wildlife parks, set in the Cardamom Hills of Idukki district at around 900 m. The reserve wraps around the Periyar lake, an artificial reservoir where the forest department and KTDC run boat cruises that are the classic way to look for elephants, gaur and birdlife along the shore. The adjoining town of Kumily, about 4 km from the lake boat landing, is the practical hub for stays, spice shops and the cardamom and pepper trade, and it sits right on the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border. Beyond the boat cruise, Periyar is known for forest-department eco-tourism such as guided nature walks, bamboo rafting, border hiking and jungle patrols, alongside spice-plantation tours in the surrounding hills.
