The story
Not one trek but twenty priced products, catalogued as eco-centre 89 on the Forest Department's own booking platform, with group minimums, ticket ceilings and slot windows. Every headline price in circulation for this forest — including ours until now — is the base rate before the 18% GST the department actually charges.
The story of Shendurney trek
First, where to go. Report to the Assistant Wildlife Warden's office at Thenmala Dam P.O., 1 km from Thenmala town centre — not to the sanctuary's map centroid, which is 20 km east in the core zone where no visitor is taken. Our own stored pin for this page was in that core zone until this update, which is precisely the error our sanctuary page warns readers about. Permission is arranged in person here; the eco-tourism counter in the town cannot sell it to you.
What you are buying is a specific product from a catalogue, and the catalogue is longer than anyone has published. The Kerala Forest Department runs a live ecotourism platform on which Shendurney is eco-centre 89, and it carries twenty programmes with current rupee tariffs. Five of them are walks: one hour, three hours and six hours of trekking, a two-hour Birder's Trail, and a students' Nature Walk. The rest are water and vehicles — two boat safaris, boating to Idimuzhanganpara, two coracle rides, safaris to Kalamkunnu and Rosemala, the Rosemala View Point, and camping at Pallivasal, Idimuzhanganpara, Rockwood and Kalamkunnu.
Read the prices carefully, because they are not what they look like. Every rate is for a GROUP, with a top-up per additional head. The three-hour trek is ₹2,360 for four people, not ₹2,360 each, with ₹354 for each extra walker up to ten. The one-hour is ₹1,180 for five. The six-hour is ₹8,850 for five — and only ten tickets exist for it in a day, with a start window between 09:00 and 10:00 and nothing later. The Birder's Trail is the only dawn slot in the whole catalogue, opening at 06:30. The students' walk is the only product built for a bus: ₹1,180 for ten, up to forty.
Two consequences follow immediately. A solo walker cannot buy the one-, three- or six-hour trek at the listed price — the party minimum is real, so you either find four others or pay for the group. And the ticket ceilings tell you what the department is willing to allow: ten places a day on the six-hour walk, against a hundred at the Rosemala View Point. That is a management decision about how many people should be deep in this forest at once, expressed as a number.
The walking itself is the reason to come. This is wet evergreen forest in the Agasthyamalai belt — buttressed trunks, dense understorey, permanent green half-light, and a humidity that does not lift. It is a genuinely different biome from the open deciduous country most Indian wildlife tourism happens in, and it looks and sounds nothing like it. Elephant, gaur and sambar use this landscape and their sign is common on the paths; lion-tailed macaque and Nilgiri langur occur; hornbills are usually heard before they are seen. Sightings are incidental and are never to be pursued. Plan around the heat rather than the distance — still air, closed canopy and permanent damp are what actually tire people here, and an early start is worth more than fitness.
On guides we should be careful, because we have been wrong here before. The department's records encode party sizes and caps but say nothing about guides at all, so we will not tell you a guide is mandatory as though it were sourced. What we can tell you is who the people are: not the Kani, who this page previously claimed live in these hills — our sanctuary page corrects that, and the management plan enumerates only private estates inside the boundary. The ecotourism here is run by an eighteen-member Shendurney Ecotourism Development Committee drawn from nine eco-development committees on the boundary, and the surcharge on your ticket reaches those households.
The water tier deserves one warning. Idimuzhanganpara Boating (₹5,900 for five) and Idimuzhanganpara Camping (₹7,875 for two) are two separate purchases for the same place, and the camp is reached by boat. The camp also has the tightest cut-off in the system — 72 hours, against 24 for most products — and the smallest allotment, five tickets. It was the only Shendurney product carrying blackout dates when we read the system. Coracle rides at ₹354 to ₹590 keep running when the big boats cannot, which matters more than it sounds: the Parappar reservoir is an irrigation store, drawn down hard before the monsoon, and the water you booked is not always the water you get.
Legend & myth
Every named Shendurney programme you have read about has been retired. Kerala Tourism's own ecotourism page advertises eight products by name — Hard Trekking, Sky Walk, Reservoir Walk, Wet 'N' Wild Trial, Idimuzhanganpara Nights, Woody Rockwood, Kurumthotti Top Hut Camping and Rosemala–Pallivaasal Trekking — and those names are quoted verbatim right across the travel web. The Forest Department's own live booking system carries none of them. What survives is localities, not products: Idimuzhanganpara and Rockwood as camps, Rosemala and Pallivasal as a safari and a camp. Sky Walk, Reservoir Walk, Wet 'N' Wild and Kurumthotti Top Hut appear nowhere in the operator's system. Ring the number on the tourism page and ask for Wet 'N' Wild and you are asking for something that is not sold.
We have to retract something of our own here, and it is a different mistake from the one we were correcting. This page used to say that Sky Walk, Reservoir Walk and Wet 'N' Wild belonged to the Thenmala eco-tourism zones rather than to sanctuary trekking. That is wrong. Kerala Tourism publishes all three explicitly as Shendurney forest programmes with in-forest localities — Sky Walk through Enippara and Mananthara, Reservoir Walk at Rosemala and Pallivasal. They were sanctuary programmes. The correct correction is that the operator has retired the names, not that they were somebody else's.
Then the prices, and this is the most useful paragraph we can give you. Kerala Tourism prints ₹2,000 per person for Sky Walk and Hard Trekking. The operator's nearest equivalent, the three-hour trek, is ₹2,360 for four Indians — a group rate. A family of four reading the tourism page budgets ₹8,000 for a walk that costs ₹2,360, which is three and a half times the real price. Every trekking, boating and safari line at Shendurney is a base group price plus a per-head top-up. The Rosemala View Point, at ₹83 Indian and ₹236 foreign, is the only genuinely per-head line in the entire tariff.
And the arithmetic that decodes all of it. The famous ₹7,500-for-two camping figure — printed by Kerala Tourism, repeated by every aggregator, and quoted on our own sanctuary page as the only concrete number anyone published — is a pre-GST ghost. Multiply it by 1.18 and you get ₹8,850, which is exactly the operator's current six-hour trekking price. Run the same multiplication across the board: ₹2,000 becomes ₹2,360, ₹1,000 becomes ₹1,180, ₹3,000 becomes ₹3,540, ₹300 becomes ₹354, ₹200 becomes ₹236, ₹70 becomes ₹83. Every headline Shendurney number in circulation is a base rate quoted without the 18% GST the Forest Department actually charges. Once you know that, the wrong prices on the internet stop being wrong and start being legible.
The booking story has also changed under us. Our pages have said permission is arranged in person and not online, which reads as though no online system exists. One does — the department's statewide platform, with payment wired in, and Shendurney fully catalogued on it with rates, slot times, ticket allotments and a 20-day booking horizon. But every Shendurney slot carries online booking switched off. So the practical advice survives and the reason is a toggle rather than an absence, which means it can flip without warning. Two cautions come with it: the portal serves a broken certificate chain, so a browser will refuse to open it, and two addresses that look official are not usable — the Forest Department page third parties cite for Shendurney fees returns a 404, and a booking domain that surfaces in search does not resolve at all. That is the second look-alike-domain trap in this district.
Last, a claim of ours that the operator's own data contradicts. We have said access is restricted or closed during the southwest monsoon. Reading the system in mid-August — mid-monsoon — every trekking, boating and safari slot was live, and no seasonal closure is encoded anywhere. The only blackouts recorded were five dates on Idimuzhanganpara Camping, marked simply not available. That is an availability block on one camp, not a season. Our monsoon-closure line was an inference and we have dropped it. What remains true is that this is a rainforest, that walking here in heavy rain is unpleasant and leech-ridden, and that the department can suspend access at any time for reasons it does not have to publish.

History
Shendurney is catalogued by the Kerala Forest Department as eco-centre 89, in the Shendurney division, Kollam district, on the department's statewide ecotourism platform. Twenty programmes are listed against it with current tariffs, slot windows, party minimums and daily ticket allotments.
Reporting and permission are handled at the Assistant Wildlife Warden's office of the Shendurney Wildlife Division at Thenmala Dam P.O., about 1 km from Thenmala town centre, 19.9 km from Punalur and 61.4 km from Kollam.
The walking programmes are one, three and six hours; a two-hour Birder's Trail starting at 06:30; and a two-hour students' Nature Walk for parties of ten to forty. Vehicle safaris run to Kalamkunnu and Rosemala, and there is a separately ticketed Rosemala View Point. Water programmes are two boat safaris, boating to Idimuzhanganpara, and coracle rides.
Camps operate at Pallivasal, Idimuzhanganpara, Rockwood and Kalamkunnu, all checking in at 15:00 and out at 11:00. Kalamkunnu has the cheapest beds in the sanctuary, in suite and normal rooms; Idimuzhanganpara is reached by boat and carries the longest booking cut-off and the smallest allotment.
The tourism department's older programme names — Hard Trekking, Sky Walk, Reservoir Walk, Wet 'N' Wild, Idimuzhanganpara Nights, Woody Rockwood, Kurumthotti Top Hut and Rosemala–Pallivaasal — are still published on Kerala Tourism's site and appear in no current operator record. The localities survive; the product names do not.
Day-to-day ecotourism here is delivered through an eighteen-member Shendurney Ecotourism Development Committee drawn from nine eco-development committees around the sanctuary, which also runs the boating and the deer rehabilitation centre. Why visit
It is the actual forest behind the visitor attraction — closed-canopy wet evergreen, entered on foot, with the eco-park noise gone within ten minutes.
The catalogue is genuinely varied: a one-hour walk, a six-hour walk with ten tickets a day, a dawn birding trail, boat safaris, coracles, vehicle safaris and four camps.
The Birder's Trail is the only 06:30 start in the whole system, which is the hour this forest is worth being in.
Camping at Idimuzhanganpara means arriving by boat across a reservoir with protected forest on both shores.
Wet evergreen forest is a different biome from the deciduous country most Indian wildlife tourism happens in, and it looks and sounds unlike it.
