The story

A steel walkway on piers through the mid-storey of the forest, a rope course nobody has ever put a price on, and one guided walk out to a relict swamp — all sold over one counter. The operator publishes three different distances and three different prices for that walk, on three of its own pages, and they are all still live.

The story of Thenmala trekking

This page is about what you can actually buy at the Tourist Facilitation Centre and do the same day. The walking here is ticketed, guided or handrailed, and it deliberately stays out of the sanctuary interior — that is a different regime with a different department, and it has its own page.

The thing most people come for is the elevated walkway, and it is worth knowing what it is before you pay for it. It is not a rope bridge and not a canopy net. It is a steel-decked catwalk that zig-zags across a small valley on slim piers, reached by long stair flights, carrying you at the height of the forest's middle storey. From outside it reads as a structure threaded between the trunks rather than fixed to them — the piers are independent columns standing beside the trees. The ticket is ₹70 adult, ₹55 child, ₹45 excursion and ₹100 international, and note what it is called on the operator's own tariff: Adventure Zone (Elavated Walk Way). The whole zone is priced under the name of one walkway.

The genuine walk is Soft Trekking, and the mechanics matter more than the marketing. It is guided, it runs to a Myristica swamp forest patch at Kalamkunnu/Pallamvetty, and the operator's own itineraries add a fourth name we have seen nowhere else in print: Pandavanpara Rock. There is a minimum party of five — or you pay the equivalent, so a solo walker either waits for four strangers or buys all five places — and a maximum of twenty. The best time, by the operator's own advice, is 07:00 to 10:00, and both of its package itineraries schedule the walk at 06:45. And the detail nobody prints: it is one-way. A bus collects you from a finishing point three kilometres from the centre.

What you are walking to is the reason to do it. Myristica swamps are relict freshwater swamp forest, and the operator's claim for this one is emphatic — it can be seen only in this part of the country. Set that beside the Forest Department's own figure, which we carry on the sanctuary page: about 20 hectares in six mapped fragments, roughly a tenth of one per cent of Shendurney. For the price of two cinema tickets you are being walked to the edge of one of the rarest forest types in India, and the operator devotes eleven lines to it.

The rest of the Adventure Zone is where the published record gives out. The operator's entire description of it is forty-six words listing seven things — the elevated walkway, mountain biking, rock climbing, river crossing, nature trails, resting spots and a lotus pond — and it prices none of them. There is exactly one Adventure Zone line on the tariff and it is the walkway. So every per-activity price you will read online for rock climbing or mountain biking here has no published source behind it. Where the hard activities are genuinely sold is a channel almost nobody writes about: Out Bound Learning, the school and corporate programme, at ₹999 plus taxes per child for a nine-to-six day with a minimum of twenty participants, or ₹1,999 for professionals.

One classification is worth carrying away, because it is the operator's own and it cuts against the whole marketing. TEPS says it sells two kinds of product: ecotourism, and eco-friendly general tourism. Ecotourism, on its own definition, is the trekking programmes — nothing else. The leisure zone, the adventure zone, the butterfly safari, the children's park, the deer centre, the boating and the fountain are all filed under general tourism. On the operator's own books, the walk is the only thing at Thenmala that is actually ecotourism, and it is the least documented thing it sells.

The honest scoping. If you want wilderness you will be disappointed by the handrails, and you should be reading our sanctuary page instead. If you want a well-organised day in real Western Ghats forest with children, no permit and no dawn start, this is one of the best-designed places in Kerala for exactly that. What you should not expect is reliable information in advance: the operator's website still carries a 2019 copyright line, one of its fixtures is dated May 2019, and its security certificate expired in July 2025 and has never been renewed, so a browser will warn you before you reach its payment page. Ring the facilitation centre.

Legend & myth

You cannot find out what the walk at Thenmala costs, or how far it goes, because the operator publishes three different answers on three of its own pages — and none of them matches what the state tourism department publishes on a fourth. This is not a nitpick. It is the single most practical fact about visiting here.

Page one, the soft trekking page: 4 km, 2 hours, between 06:00 and 16:00, minimum five trekkers or an equivalent payment of ₹625, maximum twenty, ₹125 per domestic trekker and ₹190 international. Page two, the tariff table: Soft trekking (2 km), ₹130 adult, ₹130 child, ₹85 excursion, ₹195 international. Page three, the visitor FAQ: 4 km in 2 hours, ₹60 per adult and per child, ₹120 international, minimum five or an equivalent payment of ₹300. Two kilometres or four; sixty rupees, a hundred and twenty-five, or a hundred and thirty.

The arithmetic proves these are not typos. ₹125 × 5 = ₹625, and ₹60 × 5 = ₹300. Each page is internally consistent with its own generation of the tariff, which means the FAQ is simply an older price list — roughly half the current rate — left live, still answering the question a visitor is most likely to ask. Then the fourth source: Kerala Tourism's own page for the same programme gives the window as 09:00 to 16:00, three hours later a start than the operator's own 06:00, and directly at odds with the operator's advice that the best time is 07:00 to 10:00. A visitor who trusts the state tourism department turns up after the best part of the day has gone.

The second gap is between what is built here and what is published about it. The operator's entire account of the Adventure Zone is forty-six words and seven nouns, and not one of them is a rope. But a photograph taken in the zone in August 2012 shows a full rope course: a taut cable running out of frame to a whipped collar on a trunk, a rope ladder, a lashed rope-and-timber bridge slung between two trees, a timber A-frame on the bare ground, and a green interpretive board at the bottom right that reads as Burma Bridge. It was built, it was signposted, and it has never appeared on the operator's own list of what is here. Meanwhile Kerala Tourism lists two activities the operator does not — rappelling and archery. Two arms of one government, two different menus, and no price on any of it.

Third, and this one is quickly checked. The operator's main navigation carries a Trekking item. That page returns a valid response and a completely empty body — twenty-six kilobytes of site furniture and not one word. The page for sanctuary trekking, separately, consists of a single line of text: a link to www.shendurney.com. That domain returns a 404 from the same server. The operator's sanctuary-trekking page has been pointing at a dead site for an unknown length of time.

Soft trekking is guided, priced for a minimum party of five and capped at twenty; the ticket does not provide access to the sanctuary interior. Recent visitor reviews report that much of the canopy walkway is closed and needs maintenance, but no government or operator update cited here states its operating condition. Photographs from 2012 and 2014 already show rust through the green paint, and the operator’s website has not been updated since 2019. Ask about the walkway before booking around it.

A Culture Zone is often described here at length. The operator's website carries no Culture Zone page and its tariff no Culture Zone line. The parent Thenmala page sets out the detail.

History

The site is run by the Thenmala Ecotourism Promotion Society (TEPS), which sells everything from one counter at the Tourist Facilitation Centre. Its own classification divides what it offers into two kinds of product — ecotourism, and eco-friendly general tourism — and places only the trekking programmes in the first category.

The trekking products are three. Soft Trekking, a guided walk of two hours to a Myristica swamp forest patch, priced between ₹60 and ₹130 depending on which of the operator's pages you read. One Day Trekking, which appears on the tariff as a single line at ₹10,000 for eight people — a party rate, not a per-head one — with no description page, no route and no duration published anywhere. And sanctuary trekking, described only as trekking to sanctuary from 2 hrs to 2 days, which is the Forest Department's regime and not TEPS's.

The Adventure Zone's built attractions are listed by the operator as the elevated walkway, mountain biking, rock climbing, river crossing, nature trails, resting spots and a lotus pond. Only the walkway is priced. A rope course including a Burma bridge stood in the zone in 2012 and appears in no operator listing. The one hard figure we have for the climbing comes off a signboard photographed in the park, which gives the crag as 35 m.

Online booking covers four packages — an evening package at ₹199, a four-hour package at ₹290, an adventure package at ₹480 and a package with boating at ₹629. None of the four is a trekking programme; nothing trekking-related is bookable online.

Day and overnight itinerary packages are sold at ₹475 adult, ₹350 child, ₹300 excursion and ₹700 foreigner, inclusive of GST, and both schedule the soft trek at 06:45. The Out Bound Learning programme sells the adventure activities to school and corporate groups at ₹999 plus taxes per child for a day, or ₹1,999 for professionals, with a minimum of twenty participants.

The operator's published safety provision is four lines: a daily safety check on adventure gear, a safety harness for all adventure activities, an instructor for each activity, and first aid. Its visitor tips ask you to follow all height and age restrictions on the activities — restrictions it does not publish anywhere — and state, verbatim, that you undertake the activities at your own risk and that TEPS is not responsible for accidents.

Why visit

The elevated walkway puts you level with the middle storey, which is where most of the bird activity actually is, instead of craning up through it from a path.

Soft trekking is the only thing here that leaves the ticketed zones, and it walks you to the edge of a Myristica swamp — a relict forest type of which the sanctuary holds about 20 hectares in six fragments.

It is the most family-workable forest day in southern Kerala: one counter, no permit, no guide to arrange and no dawn start.

It is honest about what it is not. The operator's own visitor tips say, in so many words, that Thenmala is not a hill station.

The walk is one-way with a bus back from the finishing point, so a two-hour trek is genuinely two hours rather than four.

And if you have a school or corporate group, the Out Bound Learning programme is the only channel through which the hard adventure activities are actually sold.

Book with the place itself. India’s cyber-crime coordination centre warned in April 2025 that convincing copies of hotel and pilgrimage booking sites are being pushed through sponsored search and social ads, taking payment for rooms the property never hears about. Use the contact and source details on each profile to confirm the exact business and booking channel. A directory entry or map pin alone does not establish an operator’s identity or current availability. Roampedia takes no commission and does not collect booking payments. If a booking page reached you through an ad, check the address bar against the property’s own site before you pay. Fraud can be reported on cybercrime.gov.in or on 1930.

Thenmala trekking — at a glance

DifficultyEasy for the zones and the elevated walkway. Soft trekking is a guided 4 km (or 2 km — see entryFee) over two hours on forest ground, one-way, with a bus back from a finishing point 3 km from the centre.
Timings⚠ The operator gives two answers on one domain: its home banner says the park runs 09:00–20:00 all days, its season-and-timings page says 09:00–17:00. Soft trekking window 06:00–16:00 per the operator, 09:00–16:00 per Kerala Tourism; the operator's own best-time advice is 07:00–10:00 (or 15:00–16:00) and both its package itineraries schedule the trek at 06:45. No weekly closing day for the park — Monday kills only the two evening shows.
Best timeNovember to February for comfort — that is our recommendation, not the operator's, which says the season is throughout the year. Rainfall averages 2,600–3,000 mm; SW monsoon May into September, NE monsoon late September–November. Trails are wet and leech-heavy through the monsoon (our own advice; the operator says nothing about leeches). Busiest at weekends, public holidays and school vacations.

Entry: Adventure Zone (the elevated walkway) ₹70 adult / ₹55 child / ₹45 excursion / ₹100 international — one ticket for the whole zone, named on the tariff after the walkway alone. Soft trekking ₹130 on the tariff table, ₹125 on the soft-trekking page and ₹60 in the operator's own FAQ; minimum five trekkers or the equivalent payment (₹625, or ₹300 on the FAQ's older generation), maximum twenty. One Day Trekking is a single tariff line at ₹10,000 for eight — a party rate, not per head, with no route or duration published. ⚠ 'Child' is by height: 137 cm+ pays adult, 76–137 cm child, under 76 cm free. 🛑 NO per-activity price exists for rock climbing, mountain biking, river crossing or any rope element.

Permit: None for the zones or for soft trekking. The sanctuary interior is a Forest Department matter and is arranged separately — you cannot add it on at this counter. Boating is sold as 'Boating + Sanctuary Entrance Fee' ₹300 (₹625 international), which is the only place on the tariff where the two departments visibly meet.

Booking: In person at the Tourist Facilitation Centre — the same counter sells everything. Phone 0475-2344800 / 0475-2344855 / +91 9495344800 / +91 9496344800; group and Out Bound Learning programmes through [email protected]. ⚠ Online booking covers only four packages and not one is a trekking programme: evening ₹199, four-hour ₹290, adventure ₹480, with boating ₹629. The site's certificate expired in July 2025, so a browser will interstitial before the payment step — use the phone.

Getting here

How to reach Thenmala trekking

  • 🚆︎ By train Thenmala station on the Kollam–Sengottai line, about 1 km from town. ⚠ Indian Railways spells it Tenmalai, code TML.
  • 🚗︎ By road About 66 km east of Kollam on the Kollam–Shencottah road; the operator's own FAQ gives 20 km from Punalur town.
  • 🚌︎ By bus KSRTC services from Kollam and Punalur.
Getting back

If you are travelling by bus or ferry, check the return service with the operator before setting out. Leave time to reach the stop or jetty after your visit.

Ask at the bus stand for the time of the last service back, not the next one. If you miss it, an auto or app cab is the fallback — agree the fare before you get in.

Do

Things to do

  • Walk the elevated walkway — a steel-decked catwalk on piers at mid-storey height, reached by long stair flights
  • Take the guided soft trek to the Myristica swamp forest patch at Kalamkunnu/Pallamvetty (the itineraries also call the route Pandavanpara Rock)
  • Walk the laid-out nature trails and rest spots in the Adventure Zone
  • Look at the rope course, if it is still standing — a cable, ladder, rope bridge and a Burma Bridge board were signposted here in 2012 and appear on no operator list
  • Bring a school or corporate group through Out Bound Learning, which is how the hard adventure activities are actually sold
Prepare

What to carry

  • Ring before you travel. The operator's website has not been updated since 2019, its sanctuary-trekking page links to a domain that 404s, and the Trekking item in its own navigation returns an empty page.
  • A solo walker cannot just join the soft trek — the party minimum of five is enforced by payment, so you either wait for four others or buy all five places at ₹625.
  • Do the walkway early. The operator's own itineraries put it at 10:00–12:00 or 14:00–17:00, which is when it is busiest.
  • The operator's tips are worth quoting: avoid scarf or shawl during adventure activities, avoid jewellery, be at the facilitation centre by 09:00, and — its words — Thenmala is not a hill station. It also states that you undertake the activities at your own risk.
  • It asks you to follow all height and age restrictions on the adventure activities but publishes none; the only height threshold it publishes anywhere is the ticketing one.
  • Carry salt or repellent for leeches between June and November. That is our advice, not the operator's.

Where Thenmala trekking is

Good to know

Thenmala trekking — frequently asked

What does the walk cost, and how long is it?

Nobody can tell you, including the operator. Its soft trekking page says 4 km, 2 hours, ₹125 domestic and ₹190 international. Its tariff table says Soft trekking (2 km) at ₹130. Its own FAQ says 4 km in 2 hours at ₹60. The arithmetic shows these are three generations of the tariff, all still live — ₹125 × 5 matches the ₹625 party minimum on one page and ₹60 × 5 matches the ₹300 on another. Budget ₹130 a head and expect to be told something else at the counter.

What is soft trekking actually like?

Guided, two hours, on forest ground to a Myristica swamp forest patch at Kalamkunnu/Pallamvetty — the operator's itineraries also call the route Pandavanpara Rock. Minimum five trekkers or the equivalent payment, maximum twenty. The window is 06:00 to 16:00, the operator's own best-time advice is 07:00 to 10:00, and its packages schedule it at 06:45. It is one-way: a bus brings you back from a finishing point 3 km from the centre.

Am I inside the wildlife sanctuary on that walk?

The operator contradicts itself. Its soft trekking page says the walk goes through the outskirts of the Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary; its FAQ says the walk is through a jungle which is not part of the sanctuary. Same site, same operator. Either way, this is not the sanctuary trekking programme, which is a Forest Department matter arranged separately.

What does the elevated walkway cost?

₹70 adult, ₹55 child, ₹45 excursion, ₹100 international — and that single ticket is the whole Adventure Zone. Note that 'child' is defined by height here, not age: 137 cm and above pays adult, 76 to 137 cm pays child, and below 76 cm is free.

How much is the rock climbing or the mountain biking?

No price is published for any of them. The operator lists seven attractions in the Adventure Zone and prices exactly one, the walkway. Any per-activity figure you find online for climbing, biking, river crossing or a zip line here has no published source. The hard activities are sold in practice through the Out Bound Learning programme for groups.

Is there a zip line?

Not on the operator's own site, which mentions neither a zip line nor rappelling anywhere. Kerala Tourism lists rappelling and archery for the same zone. A 2012 photograph taken in the Adventure Zone shows a rope course with a cable, a rope ladder, a rope bridge and a board reading Burma Bridge — so rope elements were certainly built and signposted here. We cannot tell you what is running today, and neither can the operator's website.

What are the opening hours?

The operator gives two answers on one domain: its home banner says the park runs 09:00 to 20:00 all days, and its season-and-timings page says 09:00 to 17:00. The later figure probably reflects the evening fountain and light-and-sound shows. The park has no weekly closing day; Monday kills only those two shows.

Can I book online?

Only four packages, none of them trekking: evening ₹199, four-hour ₹290, adventure ₹480, and with boating ₹629. Everything else is bought at the facilitation centre counter. Be aware that the operator's security certificate expired in July 2025 and has not been renewed, so your browser will interrupt you before the payment step — the phone is more reliable.

When should I go?

November to February is the most comfortable, which is our recommendation and not the operator's — TEPS says the season is throughout the year. Rainfall here averages 2,600 to 3,000 mm, the southwest monsoon runs May into September and the northeast from late September to November. Trails are wet and leech-heavy through the monsoon; carry salt or repellent. Weekends, public holidays and school vacations are the busiest.

How long should I allow?

Half a day covers the walkway and the zones. Add two hours plus the return bus for the soft trek, and note that the operator's own itineraries put the trek first thing and the Adventure Zone at 10:00 to 12:00 or 14:00 to 17:00 — which is exactly when the walkway is busiest. A canopy walk with a queue on it is a different structure.

Post-monsoon to late winter is usually best; avoid heavy-rain days and closed forest periods.

What are the entry fee and timings at Thenmala trekking?

Timings: ⚠ The operator gives two answers on one domain: its home banner says the park runs 09:00–20:00 all days, its season-and-timings page says 09:00–17:00.
