Madavoorpara combines a rock-cut Shiva shrine with a rocky hill landscape on Thiruvananthapuram’s northern edge. The temple and the climb offer different reasons to visit, and both deserve time.

Kerala Tourism’s older descriptions document the bridge and heritage plans, but present access must be checked at the site.
Madavoorpara brings a ninth-century-attributed rock-cut Shiva shrine and a later bamboo visitor bridge to the same hill. Their different dates are part of its story.
Kerala Tourism describes Madavoorpara as a rocky rise above the city outskirts with a small cave temple, a bamboo bridge and a viewpoint. The temple is attributed to the ninth century CE, and the tourism account notes a Vattezhuthu inscription on a pillar. It is a rare chance to compare an early rock-cut shrine with the much newer visitor route built around it.
The 100-metre bamboo bridge and huts appear in a 2018 Kerala Tourism article. That date matters: a photograph from then establishes what was built, not the condition or access of a bamboo structure today. Check the present entrance, bridge closure and staff instructions before planning the visit around it.
A 2010 Kerala Tourism report says the archaeology department selected the hill for heritage conservation, with plans for a heritage park and a telescope. That report describes a proposal, not proof that those facilities are available today. The durable attraction is the relationship between inscription, shrine and landscape.
Kerala Tourism attributes the rock-cut Shiva shrine to the ninth century and reports a Vattezhuthu inscription. It also documents a heritage-conservation initiative in 2010 and the bamboo visitor structure in 2018.

Book with the place itself. India’s cyber-crime coordination centre warned in April 2025 that convincing copies of hotel and pilgrimage booking sites are being pushed through sponsored search and social ads, taking payment for rooms the property never hears about. Use the contact and source details on each profile to confirm the exact business and booking channel. A directory entry or map pin alone does not establish an operator’s identity or current availability. Roampedia takes no commission and does not collect booking payments. If a booking page reached you through an ad, check the address bar against the property’s own site before you pay. Fraud can be reported on cybercrime.gov.in or on 1930.
