The story

A calm, hill-ringed freshwater lake near Vythiri that has quietly become one of Wayanad’s most enjoyable adventure hubs — the place people come to zip-line across open water, paddle a kayak, or pitch a tent by the shore.

The story of Karlad Lake

Karlad Lake — you will also see it written as Karalad Lake — sits in the greenery of Thariode, in the Vythiri belt of Wayanad, a short hop off the road that links Kalpetta and Vythiri towards the Banasura Sagar Dam. It is a natural freshwater lake cupped by low hills and plantation country, and on a still morning the water holds a clean mirror-image of the ridgelines around it. Unlike Wayanad’s big-ticket viewpoints, it feels unhurried, and that is much of its charm.

By local reckoning it is counted among the larger natural freshwater lakes in the district, spoken of in the same breath as the better-known Pookode Lake a little to the south. Where Pookode can get busy with day-trippers, Karlad tends to stay quieter, and many visitors treat it as the calmer, less-crowded alternative — a place to slow down rather than shuffle along a crowded boardwalk.

What sets Karlad apart today is not the water so much as what you can do on and around it. The lakeshore has been developed into the Wayanad Adventure Camp, run under the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), and it has grown into a genuine little activity park. The headline attraction is the zip-line strung across the lake, so that you glide out over open water with the hills spread out ahead of you.

Alongside the zip-line the camp typically offers kayaking and boating on the lake, rock climbing, zorbing, a nature walk and bamboo rafting, with the individual activities operated by DTPC and its partner operators for a per-activity charge. It is the kind of spot where a family can split up for an hour — one person on the water, another giving the zip-line a go, someone else simply strolling the shoreline — and regroup at the end.

The camp also runs as a place to stay the night. Swiss-style tents and a handful of cottages sit near the water, so Karlad doubles as a low-key camping and corporate-outing venue rather than a strictly day-visit lake. Waking up to mist lifting off the water, with the day’s activities a few steps away, is a large part of why people book in.

Put simply, Karlad Lake is best framed for what it honestly is: a pretty, green, freshwater lake that Kerala’s tourism machinery has turned into an accessible adventure-and-camping destination. There is no grand ancient temple-tale attached to it — the appeal is the scenery, the quiet, and the chance to spend a few hours actually doing something rather than only looking.

Choose Karlad by the activity you actually want to do. Kerala Tourism describes kayaking, rafting, a zip-line and walks around the lake, but that list is a destination overview rather than a live availability board. Before buying a package, ask which activities are operating, which charges are separate and whether weather is affecting the water-based options.

For a mixed group, plan a common meeting point on shore before anyone joins an activity queue. Ask staff about the applicable age, weight and equipment requirements for the specific activity; do not assume that suitability for a boat ride also means suitability for the zip-line. If someone mainly wants photographs and a quiet lakeside pause, check the current shore-access arrangements instead of automatically booking the same adventure package for everybody.

History

Karlad Lake’s story, as a visitor destination, is a modern one rather than an ancient one, and it is more honest to tell it that way. For most of its existence it was simply a natural freshwater lake in the Thariode area — water, reeds and surrounding plantation land — with no monument or shrine to draw crowds.

Local accounts hold that the lake formed naturally a couple of centuries ago, reshaped by a landslide in these hills, which is plausible given Wayanad’s terrain but is best treated as local belief rather than documented fact (confirm locally if it matters to you). Either way, its significance for tourism is recent.

The transformation came when the District Tourism Promotion Council developed the shoreline into the Wayanad Adventure Camp, positioning it as an activity and camping base rather than just a scenic stop. The lake’s open span made it a natural fit for a water-crossing zip-line, and boating and kayaking followed on the water itself.

Over time the camp added the wider spread of activities — rock climbing, zorbing, bamboo rafting and guided nature walks — along with tented and cottage accommodation and a small emporium for handicrafts and spices, turning a single lake into a half-day-to-overnight destination that also hosts group and corporate outings.

So the right lens on Karlad is a scenic natural lake given a second life as one of Wayanad’s adventure-tourism spots. Its history is short and practical; its pull is the setting and the activities, not a deep legend, and that is exactly how it deserves to be enjoyed.

Why visit

It is one of Wayanad’s standout adventure spots, with a lake-crossing zip-line as the signature thrill — gliding out over open water with the hills ahead.

You can actually get on the water: kayaking, pedal and row boating let you explore the lake at your own pace rather than watching from the bank.

There is a genuine spread of activities in one place — zorbing, rock climbing, bamboo rafting and nature walks — making it ideal for families or groups with mixed appetites for adventure.

It works as an overnight escape too, with Swiss-style tents and cottages by the shore for a low-key camping stay away from the busier tourist strips.

It is the calmer, less-crowded alternative to Pookode Lake — greener, quieter and unhurried, good for a slow morning by the water.

The location is convenient, sitting close to Banasura Sagar Dam and the Vythiri belt, so it slots neatly into a wider Wayanad itinerary.

  • 🚌︎ By bus Buses run to Kalpetta and Vythiri from Kozhikode and other Wayanad towns; from the nearest stop you will usually need a local taxi or auto for the last short leg to the lakeshore.
Getting back

If you are travelling by bus or ferry, check the return service with the operator before setting out. Leave time to reach the stop or jetty after your visit.

Ask at the bus stand for the time of the last service back, not the next one. If you miss it, an auto or app cab is the fallback — agree the fare before you get in.

Where Karlad Lake is

Good to know

Karlad Lake — frequently asked

What can you actually do at Karlad Lake?

The lakeshore is developed as the Wayanad Adventure Camp, run by the DTPC. Activities typically on offer include zip-lining across the lake, kayaking, boating, rock climbing, zorbing, bamboo rafting and a nature walk, plus overnight camping in tents and cottages. Each activity is usually charged separately.

Is there an entry fee, and how much are the activities?

There is generally a small entry ticket to the lake and camp, with individual adventure activities like the zip-line, boating and kayaking charged separately per person.

Is Karlad Lake better than Pookode Lake?

They are different in character. Pookode is a well-known, often busy pedal-boat lake; Karlad is quieter and more adventure-focused, with the zip-line and camp. Many visitors find Karlad the calmer, less-crowded choice, especially if you want to do activities rather than just walk around.

Yes — the Wayanad Adventure Camp offers Swiss-style tents and a few cottages by the lake, so it doubles as a camping and group-outing venue.

Is there an ancient legend attached to Karlad Lake?

No famous ancient legend is associated with it. Karlad is honestly a scenic natural freshwater lake that has been developed into an adventure-and-camping destination; its appeal is the setting and the activities, not folklore. Local accounts say it formed after a landslide a couple of centuries ago, but that is best treated as belief rather than documented history.

How far is Karlad Lake from Vythiri and Banasura Sagar Dam?

It lies in the Thariode area of the Vythiri belt, roughly 8 km from Vythiri and about 3 km from the Banasura Sagar Dam.

When is the best time to visit Karlad Lake?

October to March is best for comfortable boat trips; monsoon is greener but weather can disrupt plans.
